Gojko Bodiroga, former executive chef at Dubrovnik, has created his own little Promenade Bistro. Bodiroga's new setting may not be luxurious, but the fresh ingredients and masterful cooking rival the food served in many of the city's posher places.

Food is v. good continental but the atmosphere is abysmal. Truly, what is the matter with Winnipeg restauranteurs who simply won't get off their wallets and spend some money on lighting, furniture, signage, and art? Do not bring anyone from out of town here or it will just embarrass you.

I had the opportunity to check out Promenade Bistro in St. Boniface last night. Given the plain decor, it was a pleasant surprise. The ambiance really needs work. It's a great location with a terrific view of the bridge and the downtown Winnipeg skyline. But, it is obvious that there was a limited budget for interior design. Something really has to be done about the signage and the entrance - it looks like either a donut shop or a diner - before you get to the dining room. The good news is that the food was quite good and the prices are terrific. The lobster bisque was excellent (well under $10... I think $7.95). The filet mignon was very good (just $19.95!). But, the creme brulee was just average. I hope they can stay in business with such low prices. I'd rather they charge more for the food and spend the increased margins on new furniture, etc.
